Questionunlit = directing not to smoke, lit = reflecting fact of smoking, i think, that was the most confusing thing for me so i presumed that was what confused you. pretty weak contribution from mr hockney, bbc's always been directive/instructive... i guess it isn't pointed out enough, but there were worse things about the ceremony, and that rhetorical question distracts the reader from its own implications.

Maybe he wanted to be ironic / mischievous, picking smoking as a subject for his olympic contribution. Thanks… still a confusing contribution. I guess I am just disappointed because i think his contribution could have been so much more interesting / imaginative / or, at the very least, visually interesting / stimulating.
