Damien Hirst is rewriting the rules of the market...
Dear Damien,
I think someone has his panties up in a bunch over his lackluster sales at auction (especially compared to Jeff Koons). So you are going to have an exclusive show at auction, eh Damien? Way to really skew the market and fuck the little guy, artists and galleries alike. Are you really in need of some money or is it just the limelight? Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of some of your work, it’s beautiful, witty, has a nice kick to it, but this move to have a show at Sotheby’s is really messed up. You left Gagosian, remember? It’s not like you don’t have your pick of the litter when it comes to galleries or that you would have to worry about selling out a show. I’m disappointed in this decision and have lost quite a bit of respect for this show-pony move.
Your favorite Hyde,

When you are a contemporary living artist and your art sells for millions and you are highly successful, you as an artist cannot escape the fact that the art will be about its value/ the market. Warhol had this ‘problem’ first, but his art already was entrenched with notions of fame and value. Hirst made the skull, I think, to subvert this notion of value of art; to test its limits. This is another way to do that, the other way around. I only find it disappointing he did not establish his own auction house, or used ebay. (Now THAT would be novel; Hirst offering art in a ‘pay what you like’ construction) Ultimately he is confusing/ linking meaning of an artwork with financial value, See also this quote. There is a more meaningful and coherent post in here, but I am not capable of producing it right now. Maybe later.
